4 Stages of The Grief Process By: tate

African Grey Parrot

There are four stages to the grieving process: guilt, denial, sadness and acceptance. Often people do not believe that they should go through this process when they deal with a pet loss. Most people, however, love their animals just as strongly as they do the people in their lives, and dealing with a pet death can be even more difficult, especially if you do not let yourself grieve.

Guilt steps in after a pet loss, especially if you had to have your pet put to sleep. You may wonder if you made the right decision, or if you gave your pet the best life you could have. Remember that, if your vet recommended euthanizing your friend, it was for a reason. They don’t want your pet to suffer any more than you do.

Denial is often next, with you possibly expecting to see your loved one appear at mealtime, or at bedtime. It is difficult to cut someone out of your life that has been in it so thoroughly, so you might have a difficult time realizing that, unfortunately, your pet is no longer there.

Sadness is often the longest part of the grieving process. Some people fall into a deep depression. One of the best ways to help move through this step is to talk with others who know what you are going through. People who have lost their pets know how much yours meant to you, and are able to help you remember your friend in a good way. Soon the memories won’t be so painful anymore, and you’ll be in the acceptance phase.

Acceptance is not when you forget about your pet, but rather when you are able to remember them with mostly good thoughts. You will be able to talk about your pet without missing them so badly, and those memories will make you smile.
