Alfonso Faustino's Book: Owning A Greyhound...Things To Know! By: Randall Collins

Excerpts from Alfonso Faustino's Book: "Owning A Greyhound...Things To Know!

5. Retired Racing GH Adoption Group Process
Not all adoption groups are capable for pairing up a retired racing GH with the adopter. All adoption groups have the great intention and action of rescuing retired racing GHs off the track; however, not all are skilled and competent in training the retired racing GH for civilian life; and, the lack of skill and competence in this area will lessen the chances of success for the adopter and the retired racing GH in having a long and lasting relationship – most likely, the adopter will return the retired racing GH back to the adoption group – this is not good for the dog...

Because of the work of adoption groups throughout the world, the number of retired racing GHs that are killed and/or inhumanely treated is dropping, which is a great thing – now, the area of focus should be proper transition processes from the race track to an adopter’s home and lifestyle, which is extremely difficult for many adoption groups due to cost and skill level. For this reason, it’s extremely important to work with an adoption group that has an adoption process, such as the process listed in this section. The adoption process will increase the chances of a successful relationship with a retired racing GH who is fresh off the track...

Compromising that philosophy in order to satisfy anxious adopters, will invariably result in a poor placement that isn’t fair to the dog or the adopter.
After the retired racing GH is given to his adopter, the adoption group’s knowledgeable placement representatives are in close touch with the adopter during the first few weeks following the adoption; thereafter, the adoption group’s knowledgeable volunteers are available whenever an adopter needs additional training or help for the duration of the retired racing GH’s life.

...Adoption groups should execute the following:
1. Application;
2. Phone Interview;
3. Home Visit;
4. Matching: Retired Racing GH with Adopter;
5. Unlimited Follow-Ups;
6. Medical (Dental) Protocols;
7. Socialization; and
8. Networking with other Retired Racing GHs."
