The first poultry house I ever built had no actual chicken coop plan. The chicken coop consisted of a 6 x 10 sheet of plywood that was leaned up against an old horse barn wall that was kept cool by the shady eves of the barn.

It was a nice snug arrangement for my Rhode Island mix hen, but it didn’t take long for me to realize something more substantial was needed. After talking my neighbor who is a chicken farmer, I was able to learn some important aspects needed to build the perfect chicken coop. All I needed to do was to pick up a piece of paper a pen and carefully plan it all out.

The now knew that the best chicken coops would have many components including good ventilation. This would allow the chickens to be protected from the elements but with no drafts to make them sick or ill. Also to make sure to allow at least 2 square feet inside the coop per chicken. Outside the chicken coop 8 to 10 square feet of area is needed per chicken.

The proper plan would allow the builder to know in advance what would be the proper order of assembly of all the components. Once the frame is up the roof can be put in place and shingled to protect the rest of the structure from the elements. This will allow more time for all the details to be constructed. This would include the traps that give access the floor for proper cleaning. In some plans a hatch is installed in the roofing to allow for easier access to the interior that allows the farmer to have an easier time to catch the hens while they are sleeping or dozing on the nest when it is necessary

Keep these things in mind when drawing up your chicken coop plan and you will be sure to have a safe and well built place for your chickens to thrive.
