DOG HEARTWORM MEDICINE | INFORMATION AND MORE By: Maral Heggemeier

Dog heartworm medicine is being used today for both prevention and treatment. If you are like me you thought that when you gave one of the traditional dog heartworm medicines to your dog that you were just preventing your dog from getting heartworms. I had no idea that the dog heartworm medicine was actually treating the dog. Follow me and I will explain why this is so and discuss some alternative natural treatments.

The traditional medicine being used is also used to treat larvae that have already entered your dog’s bloodstream. The dog heartworm medicines contain a pesticide that kills the larvae. You are smart enough to know that giving your dog a pesticide can have serious consequences especially over an extended treatment and prevention time period. Imagine being able to safely and effectively treat heartworms and save a little money at the same time.

DOG HEARTWORM MEDICINE | PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

Revolution – This is a broad spectrum medication that has been reported to be the top of the list for dogs. This medication also protects your dog from flea infestations.

Interceptor – This medication is reported to prevent heartworms, hookworms, whipworm, and roundworms.

Heartgard – This medication is widely available that prevents heartworms, hookworms and roundworms. Very few side effects have been reported with this medication.

Iverhart Max – This medication is used for heartworms and tapeworms. There do not seem to be many reported side effects with this medication.

Active ingredient in Heartgard and Iverhart is ivermectin. The active ingredient in Interceptor is milbemycin and the active ingredient in Revolution is selamectin oxime. These medications work as a preventative in the sense they are actually using chemicals to kill off heartworms in their early stages. So while some say they are preventative they are also treatment.

SIDE EFFECTS FROM DOG HEARTWORM MEDICINE

Side effects from use of heartworm preventative medications include diarrhea, convulsions, vomiting and general tiredness or weakness. Your pet’s body recognizes the chemicals in the heartworm pills as poison and uses their immune systems to try and fight off what they see as foreign bodies. Therefore, when on these medications your pets will have weakened immune systems which allow your pet to get sick easier.

TREATMENT ONCE YOUR PET HAS HEARTWORMS

Several drugs were given by veterinarians in the past but not so much today. Today the treatment usually involves injecting a drug containing arsenic. The injection is given in the lower back. Two injections a day for two days is the normal treatment. After the injections your pet will be prescribed rest in order to absorb the dead heartworms.
