Dog Grooming and Using Dog Clippers 101 By: Thierry Babineaux

If you are looking into learning about dog grooming, you have come to the right place. There is a lot of information that you will need to know to be a professional dog groomer, but if you are looking for some great tips for dog grooming at home, this is the article for you.

If your dog is heavily matted, you might need a good pair of dog clippers along with scissors. You should begin using the dog clippers before you wash the dog otherwise you will need to wait a long time for the dog to dry completely so you can safely use the dog clippers on him or her. As you get better with the dog clippers you will be able to shave the dog in one piece. All of the mattes will come off in one big clump. Make sure you are not shaking while you are using dog clippers because you can cut your dog.

Take frequent breaks while using dog clippers. The dog clippers can become very hot rather quickly if they are not allowed to rest. You will also need to clean the fur from the dog clippers a few times while you are clipping the dog. Cool clean clippers are essential in safe dog grooming.

The most difficult part of dog grooming is not the dog clippers, it is actually the dog washing. Especially if you are bathing your dog at home in your bathtub. If you are not careful you could end up taking a bath too. Treats prove to be your best friend while you are dog grooming the first several times.

When you are on the bathing part of your dog grooming you should not completely fill the tub with water. Instead, you should put maybe an inch or so of water in the bottom of the tub. Use this water to wet your dog and to get a good lather up. Watch out for the eyes and ears, shampoo and water can cause eye irritations and ear infections.

As you complete the lathering of your pooch, you need to drain the bottom of your bathtub for the next step of dog grooming, and probably the most interesting step. Begin running warm water into the tub and rinse your dog. The faster you can do this the better you are. However, make sure you rinse the dog completely so he or she does not get irritated skin from the remnants of shampoo. Again, avoid the ears and eyes.

You should continue rinsing your dog until the water runs clear, from soap and dirt. Then you can let your dog out of the tub, and begin towel trying him or her off. You can also use a hair dryer on a warm setting but continuously move the hair dryer so you do not burn your dog.

Once your dog is clean and dry you can begin brushing him or her. This is the fun part to dog grooming. Keep an eye out for random hairs that will need the dog clippers or scissors. Be careful and make sure your dog is completely dry before you attempt to use the dog clippers on him or her again.

In some cases, while a dog is going through the second dog grooming, he or she will become a bit antsy. It is perfectly fine to give the dog a break. Dog grooming can be stressful for a dog, especially if he or she is a little older and has never been groomed before. The same goes for a dog that is overly nervous when you use the dog clippers.
