Give Your Other Pets Some Extra Time and Attention By: tate

When our pets die, we experience deep loss. It is a very difficult time to go through, and you will probably find yourself experiencing denial, grief and anger. One thing a lot of us fail to think about, when we deal with pet loss, is the surviving pets in our home.

Most people that have pets have more than one. The typical combination is one dog and one cat, but some have five dogs and one cat, or two cats, a lizard and a canary. No matter what your pet household combination is, it is a safe bet that the other pets in the home are going to notice that something is off. Pets are extremely sensitive, and will recognize not only that you are hurting, but that their friend is no longer there.

There are owners who have one dog and one cat. They believe that the animals hate each other, but learn differently when one of the pair moves on. They might not show it in front of you, but the two probably get along much better than you know. I currently have two cats, and one tends to growl at the other all the time. One night I let the cat that growls outside, and she stopped, turned around, and waited patiently for the younger cat to go out with her. Though they seem to not care for each other, they really do.

It is important, when you deal with a pet death, to remember that your other pets will be grieving too. Give them some extra time and attention, and know that you are not alone in your grief. Helping them will often help you to work through the grief yourself.
