How to Care For GoldFish -- Water Quality By: Gary DeWitt

The quality of water in your aquarium is vital for your the health of you goldfish. Check with your local pet stores to see if the quality of your local tap water is acceptable.

Water should be free of chlorine and chemicals before it is added to the aquarium. Letting it set out for at least 8 hours for the chlorine to evaporate. Use a clean well rinsed container for holding the water you will use for your goldfish. Letting the water sit out for 8 hours also allows it to come to room temperature before you add it to the aquarium. This is the ideal temperature for adding water.

The water should also be adjusted to a neutral Ph level. Goldfish really prefer a Ph of 7.2 to 7.6. Your pet store can recommend the proper chemicals and addition rates to adjust the Ph to neutral.

An aquarium that does not receive regular water changes and additions can cause ailments or even the death of your goldfish. So clean it and change out 10-25 percent of the water on a regular basis. More than 25 percent can cause a too drastic temperature change.

Weekly, change out 10 to 25 percent of the water in the aquarium, even if you do not think it needs it. If you change all of the water at once you may shock your fish, or even cause their death. Some people recommend stirring the gravel at this time so that the filter can pick up all of the fish waste that has been produced.

Using a high quality mechanical and biological filter will help maintain the water to the highest quality. A biological filter could be included with the mechanical filter, or it could be a separate under gravel filter.
