Is Man's Best Friend Eating Healthy Foods? By: Stacy Kubach

African Grey Parrot

The digestive systems of dogs and cats are similar in many ways. 1) Their digestive systems are acidic, 2) they do not have long intestines and 3) they are made to digest one type of protein at a time, not multiple types like man-made foods. Their digestive systems are made to eat raw meats, which are full of B-vitamins that are very important to good health.

One report discussed the fact that pet foods have more food additives and artificial ingredients than processed foods do for humans. According to this article, this is the only way to make the foods desirable for the pet, due to the poor quality of its ingredients.

Vegetables are a vital part of a dog's diet and no, they don't hunt for vegetables. The animals they killed provided the predigested vegetables needed. Give your dog a carrot and you would see it again during elimination because he does not have the intestinal make-up to eat and digest them on his own. Carnivores will first search their prey's stomach when they make a kill and sometimes will leave the rest.

Dogs are notorious for eating non-stop as long as the food is in front of them. They do not chew like cats; they swallow whole. If your dog has a habit of eating disgusting things such as vomit, poop, dead carcasses, or rotten garbage, chances are they are looking for the missing nutrients that they are not getting from there food. A good diet should eliminate these habits. If you start feeding home-made foods, let them regulate themselves as they do in the wild. They will get on their own schedule, not on one that is imposed upon them.

Wild Animal shows on TV and Cable accurately portray lions with big full bellies who walk right next to antelope and zebra without even looking at them. They only kill when they need too. Similarly, dogs and cats eat until they are satisfied. Then they rest, digest and eliminate before the next feeding.

A dog or cat that is fed a properly balanced diet will not need to drink as much water. The food will provide the necessary moisture content that their bodies need. Always feed your pet as you would feed yourself. Organic is best, along with good distilled water. It is not the end of the world if you don't do this, but just do your best.

Your pets will decide what they like and don't like. They will let you know because some like meat more than vegetables. If your pets are unsure about their new diet, add small amounts of the home-made food a little at a time. In time you will have converted them over. Just remember not to feed them onions, chocolate, and fish!
