Nobody knows your pet better than you do. This is why it is so important that you be the one to make the decision if your pet needs to be euthanized. But how do you decide if your best friend should be euthanized? There are some questions that you can ask yourself that will help you to know that you have made the right decision.
Is your pet enjoying life to the fullest? If you’ve got a dog who loves to run that can’t get around anymore, he is probably not enjoying life as much as he could be.
How many good days does your pet have? If your pet has more bad days than good days, you have to take that into account.
How much pain is your pet in? If your pet whimpers every step they take, or has stopped eating, they are in a lot of pain.
Your vet will be able to tell you what your animal’s prognosis is, but it is generally up to you to decide the fate for your best friend. Sometimes it is important to look to their welfare over yours.
The hard part isn’t making the decision, it’s living with it. It’s hard sometimes to not feel guilty over making the decision to euthanize your pet. Pet death is never easy, but it’s even more difficult when you are the one making the choice. One of the easiest ways to get over the feeling of guilt is to talk with other people who have been where you are. By remembering your loved one, you will be able to get past the pet loss much sooner and smoother.
