North American Northern Pike By: Molten Marketing

African Grey Parrot

Northern pike, like many other species of fish, is indigenous to a colder clime. This particular fish, however, is mostly found in the shallow and cool freshwaters of Saskatchewan. Northern pike are well known locally as an easy catch, since they attack pretty much anything that comes their way.

These fish are on the small side; however, there have been instances of much larger northern pike caught. Typically, northern pike spawn in the spring, with the females laying copious eggs in the slight chill of spring water. It does not take long before those eggs mature, and the northern pike babies are on their way.

As they grow, northern pike change from the infancy stages of being herbivorous to the adult stage of carnivorous. These fish, as they grow, develop sharp teeth that can quickly and efficiently snag their prey. Despite these many sharp teeth, northern pike, not exactly known for their patience, are apt to cut their meals into a few pieces and swallow the larger chunks.

Of course, other fish are not the only ones who serve as meal tickets for northern pike. They will eat pretty much anything they can find, including slimy choices like frogs or leeches. The reason for this is likely due to the fact that northern pike are, again, less likely to slowly feast and more likely to cut their prey into a few bites and devour them.

All in all, northern pike are a predatory species, existing in the cool waters of Saskatchewan, for the most part. Their tendency to lurk in shallow, shadowy waters aids them in their feeding as well as reproduction. So, if northern pike is what you are after, check the shallow, cool water of Saskatchewan's lakes and streams.
