The green iguana has adjusted itself in important ways with regard to its body chemistry as a result of the common iguana diet. The more common green iguana can grow to 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in length from head to tail. Some types of iguana however have been known to mature beyond 2 metres in length although this is quite rare. The bodyweight for a large iguana can be up to 18 pounds and sometimes more.
Normally found in captivity as a pet due to its calm inclination and bright colors, it can be demanding to care for properly. Space requirements and the need for special lighting and heat can prove trying to an amateurish hobbyist.
Green iguana are also among the most popular reptile pets in the United States, despite being quite trying to care for. In fact, most captive green iguanas decease inside the first year, and numerous are either turned loose by their owners or given to reptile rescue groups once owners realise how much endeavor is involved to care for an iguana.
The green iguana's large population varies from the rain forests of northern Mexico, through Central America and the Caribbean Islands, out as far as southern Brazil and other small pockets of iguana. Green iguana spend most of their lives in the canopy of trees, dropping only infrequently to reproduce, lay eggs, or change trees.
Besides the long fingers and claws, green iguanas have many fascinating physical adjustments. Green iguanas have very good senses of hearing and smell and outstanding sight. Their long tail is also quite sharp, and can be snapped in the air as a defense mechanism.
The tail can also break off if it is caught by a predatory animal, but grows back without permanant impairment. The color of the green iguana skin helps to camoulflage the iguana. If they are discovered however and want to get away quickly, these iguanas can move quickly, dive from trees into water and swim well. The green iguanas survival instict is finely honed.
