The Popularity of College Dog Mascots By: Susan Myers

There are hundreds of college mascots in the United States; they may be an animal as classic as an Eagle or as silly as Sammy the Banana Slug. Though there are certainly a plethora of college mascots, dogs and wolves seem to be quite popular in college sports.

There are a total of 5 wolf mascots in universities throughout the United States. Though wolves are not domestic dogs, they are part of the dog family. Wolves are intimidating, ferocious, and mystical; a perfect concoction for a dynamite mascot. Here is a list of college wolf mascots in the United States:
- Alphie, the costumed wolf mascot of the University of Nevada (Reno) Wolf Pack
- Lou Wolf, the live wolf mascot of the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers
- Mr. and Mrs. Wuf, the two costumes wolf mascots of the North Carolina State Wolfpack
- Rowdy Raider, the recently changed wolf mascot of Wright State; their mascot was formerly a Viking
- Wolfie, the official mascot of Western Oregon University

Another common theme of mascots on the college scene are huskies. These northern sled dogs are known for their speed, strength and endurance. There are several listed university husky mascots in the U.S. Some of these include:
- Blizzard T. Husky, the mascot of Michigan Tech
- Harry, the husky of University of Washington
- Jonathan, the beloved husky of the University of Connecticut
- King Husky, of Northeastern University
- Roongo the Husky, mascot of Bloomberg University of Pennsylvania
- Victor E. Husky, official mascot of Northern Illinois University

Another extremely popular dog mascot is the bulldog, or as the University of Georgia would say, “the bulldawg.” These dogs are well known for their stout build, rough-em-tough-em attitude, and their over-all strength and fearlessness. There are a total of 10 college bulldog mascots listed in the United States:
- Ben, the bulldog mascot of McPherson College
- Bully, the live and costumed mascot of Mississippi State University
- Harry Dawg and Uga, both popular mascots of the University of Georgia Bulldogs
- Handsome Dan, the live bulldog mascot of Yale, in addition to being the first official mascot pronounced by a University in the United States
- Jack, the live mascot of the Georgetown Hoyas
- Lulu and Mac T. Bulldog, the two live mascots of Gardener-Webb University
- Q, the live bulldog mascot of Gonzaga University
- Spike, the bulldog mascot of the Samford University’s Bulldogs
- Tech, the live bulldog mascot of Louisiana Tech University
- Timeout, the costumed mascot of Fresno State University

Finally, there are a few other dog mascots that fall into the category of random breeds of dog mascots. These include a Collie, a Boston Terrier, a Saluki dog (similar to a husky), a Scottie dog and finally a Bluetick Coonhound.

Why are dogs so popular as mascots? Is it because they are strong, loyal, and lovable? Is it because they have high levels of endurance, strength, agility, and speed? Or is it because they are well-known and familiar animals?

Dogs possess many character traits and physical qualities people look for in an athletic team. Dogs are loyal to their pack (or family), a trait that is absolutely necessary in a competitive team. They are also strong, aggressive when they need to be, and work hard to please their owners (or win for their team).

Because of these traits, dog mascots are certainly popular in colleges and universities in the United States. If you happen to go to a college sporting event who has a dog as mascot, keep your eyes peeled; you just might get to pet him!
