Washington State Dog-A-Thon: celebrating man's best friend By: ONLY for PET LOVERS

By Amanda Murdock, ONLYforPETLOVERS Seattle

TACOMA, Wash. - Dog owners and their dogs, 1500 strong, gathered at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, Wash., just outside of Tacoma, on Saturday to raise money for the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County and enjoy Washington’s largest dog walk.

Dog lovers of all ages gathered at the 2008 Dog-A-Thon to take a one-mile walk or four-mile hike to raise money to help homeless pets find loving homes. The all day event included training challenges, K-9 demonstrations, and a mutt show. Prizes were awarded for owners and canines that were best dressed, most like owner, best behaved, and more.

In 2007, Dog-A-Thon raised $125,000 for homeless pets, a scenario more common now because of rising costs of living and the sinking economy. "This is the 18th Dog-A-Thon, and every year the event grows," said Monica Wylie, events manager for the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County. "This is now the second largest dog event in the state."

The event’s purpose was to raise awareness in the community. "We are encouraging pet owners to spay and neuter," said Wylie. "It impacts the community and the economy, and we want people to be informed." All proceeds benefit the animal shelter and help defray the costs of housing, feeding, and medical care for homeless pets.

Vendor row included many non-profits, trainers encouraging pet owners to enroll in classes and companies introducing some of their canine-friendly products.

The staff of Droolz Organic dog treats handed out some wholesome treats for our canine pals and they seemed to be a hit. Cherie Sykes Plaisted, Droolz Organic CEO and founder, explained that she began baking her own treats when she found out her dog was allergic to wheat. She went to work baking treats that are wheat, soy, sugar, and corn free.

The Positive Approach Dog Training & Daycare team was prepared with a bucket of treats and a dice game that owners rolled for tricks. From rolling over to walking backward, dogs took the test, and the owners creatively helped them succeed.

The dogs were excited to socialize while they perused the vendor booths for treats, toys, and apparel. Doggie outfits, backpacks, and water accessories were abundant while the Best Dressed Competition inspired some great ideas and laughs.

The event brought together dog owners, lovers, and trainers, while raising money and encouraging awareness for their less fortunate animal friends. From large to small, young to old, dogs and owners alike came together for a day celebrating dogs.
