A best friend is defined as someone whom you can count on every time you feel down and out, someone who accepts you despite your imperfections and will stand beside you through thick and thin. I haven’t met a dog owner yet who didn’t place their dog at the top of their list when they were asked to name their best friends. Because dogs are highly sociable animals, they are extremely loyal to their owners. The unconditional love and companionship they provide to owners and their families have earned them the title "Man's Best Friend" for over a century now. This loyalty and friendship has resulted in dog owners treating them as family members.

Dogs, like humans, are highly social creatures and possess a strong desire to communicate and interact with people. They easily fit in to our lives and interests and can easily adjust to just about any environment with proper training. Whether it’s for a playmate, for work, or for protection, with the numerous dog breeds available, you can find a dog that suits you. They rarely disappoint their owners which is evident by the countless number of stories about different dog's acts of heroism.

A dog that has lived with their owner all it’s life possesses a loyalty for their owner that is unwavering and immeasurable. Being pack animals, dogs consider their owners the leader of their pack; therefore, they are always by your side no matter what the situation may be. Dogs have been known to travel great distances to reunite with their owners and on many occasions have sacrificed their lives trying to save their owners. A loyal dog also makes great company when you spend a lot of time alone.

There is no such thing as a perfect dog owner and yet with all our imperfections, dogs overlook them and shower us with unconditional love and devotion. They never question your shortcomings and are always seeking your approval. There’s nothing like coming home after a long day of work and being greeted at the door by your tail wagging friend. This not only puts a smile on your face, by petting your dog for a few minutes everyday you relax and reduce your own stress levels.

Dog's are great companions and are will to go anywhere and do most anything you ask of them without any hesitation. A fair-weather friend they are not!. They can understand how you feel just by reading your facial expressions and body movements. They know how to comfort you when you are down, depressed and feel that the world is against you and when you need them they will be by your side during tough moments of your life. There to give you support and cheer you up. They can also be your confidant and will never share your secrets about love and life.

Aside from being a man's best friend, some dogs wake up everyday and go to work. They may guard your property or serve as a service dog for a disabled person. Your dog is capable of doing these and many other tasks, if you properly train them. Aside from these, dogs are also a positive influence in helping you maintain a healthy life. They help us relax, cope with stress and lower our cholesterol level and blood pressure. In fact, according to studies, dogs lessen the number of heart attacks among dog owners and prolong their life expectancy. It’s no wonder they are considered “Man’s Best Friend”.
