How Cats Communicate with their Owners

Cats, unlike dogs, do not communicate with noisily. They have a much more subtle approach; they are in a way, very similar to humans because you can nearly always tell their emotions by simply staring them in the eye!

Purring: Cats will often purr when they are showing affection to their owners. This is one very major way that cats communicate with their owners; they will purr whenever they are getting a good stroke or even simply being placed in front of a warm fireplace!

Smooching: Whenever a cat smooches up to your leg, it is often a sign of greasing. For example: if you were to be eating your dinner, your cat might pop underneath the table and start smooching up against your legs! Thus is a sign of them begging for some of the food that you are eating! If you own a dog and you are giving it a good stroke; your cat will of course be jealous and similarly to the last example will start smooching up to you asking for attention!

Meowing: This is a bit of a tongue twister that you wouldn’t often say but anyway, whenever a cat meows or makes a high pitch squeak it is obviously not too happy! This is often a sign of jealousy, if they’re scared or perhaps the fact that you may not have been treating them properly. If they have just woken up and they are meowing, don’t even worry! A cat is similar to humans and meowing is similar to a yawn at certain times, you just have to know when!

Biting: Similarly to meowing, cats will bite you out of aggression. They are also likely to bite you out of playfulness, this will not of course be a huge bite that will leave a jaw mark; it will simply be a nip! When you are petting your cat and it suddenly, out of the blue, bites you; it is not out of aggression, the cat just does not wish to be petted!

Body language, waving of tails etc.: A cat will often wave its tail around if it is begging for food! Cats also find it a polite sort of greeting to press noses against each other; sort of like us saying hello! Whenever you see a cat licking itself, it is sort of “taking a shower” but if it is licking you or someone else it would most certainly be showing care and affection!

Do cats at all communicate like dogs? Of course not! A cat is much more subtle and barely ever communicates unless they are showing jealousy! A dog will basically bark at everything it sees making it a lot harder to tell when they are trying to communicate with you; a cat is more likely to plant themselves in the corner and wait until they see someone/something else that has something better than them!

Now that you understand how cats behave when they are communicating with their owners, the rest is up to you! You must treat your cat with respect and treat it as though it is your child, a cat is a huge responsibility!
